In 1936 Mr. West was a co-founder of Stockton, West, Burkhart Advertising. He held such positions there as secretary, vice president and creative director and chairman of the board. He retired as creative board chairman in 1972. From 1929-36 he had been associated with Ralph H. Jones Co. advertising in New York and Cincinnati as a senior copywriter and later acting copy chief. After his retirement Mr. West worked as a creative advertising consultant. In an eight-year period, his advertisements and campaigns won 28 first-place regional and national awards from the American Advertising Federation in best ad or best series categories. He wrote and directed advertising campaigns for more than 40 companies during his career, including CG&E, U.S. Shoe Co, Clark Grave Vault Co, Columbus, The Enquirer and Cincinnati Bell. Mr. West also worked on such civic campaigns as the 1975 Fine Arts Fund, whose slogan and ideas were repeated the next year; 1970 United Appeal, the successful 1967 Cincinnati school levy renewal campaign and the 1962 downtown redevelopment and convention center bond issue. >From 1936-1960, he worked on the Jewish Welfare Fund, Community Chest, Navy recruitment, United Appeal, Goodwill Society, and War Chest during World War II. "He was very kind, warm, generous, happy and friendly," said a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Stephen D. West, Cincinnati. Mr. West was a 1923 graduate of Hughes High School. He completed undergraduate studies at the University of Cincinnati in 1927. He was president of the Student Council and head cheerleader and was president of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He received his law degree at UC in 1929. Mr. West was a former board member of the Hyde Park Community Methodist Church and participated in many of its fund-raising campaigns. He was a member of the Hyde Park Country Club, where he was the 1964 veterans champion. He was a past secretary of the Cincinnati Gyro Club. He leaves his wife, Mary Frances Elwell West; a son, Stephen; Cincinnati; two daughters, Patricia Wineland, Novato, Calif., and Margaret Wachs, Cincinnati; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a brother, James H., Northbrook, Ill., and a sister, Maxine Gaither, Phoenix, Ariz. No visitation. Funeral and burial will be Thursday at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hyde Park Community Methodist Church.
