E. ALWARD, farmer and stock raiser, P. O. Benton Ridge, was born in Iowa, December 16, 1855, son of Alfred L. and Harriet (Cayton) Alward, natives of Ohio. Alfred L. Alward, a farmer by occupation, enlisted in the One Hundred and Thirty-fifth Ohio National Guards, was taken prisoner, and died in the Andersonville Prison. The subject of this sketch was reared in Licking County, Ohio, and attended the common schools, also the Pataskala graded school. He afterward learned boot and shoe-making, and was foreman of the boot and shoe manufactory at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home in Xenia, Ohio, for four years. In 1876 Mr. Alward went West and engaged in stock-farming. He has been engaged in farming in Blanchard Township, this county, since 1881, and owns 240 acres of the finest land on the Blanchard River bottom. In 1881 he was united in marriage with Frances, daughter of Lewis Dukes, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Alward are consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In politics he is a Republican. He is a member of the K. of P.
