O. West Independence, was born June 23, 1815, in County Down, Ireland. His parents, who were of Scotch and Welsh descent, came to America in 1816. They first settled in Virginia, from there moving to Pennsylvania; thence, in 1826 or 1827, to Wayne County, Ohio, where they remained until 1834 or 1835, when they came to this county and settled on Section 9, Big Lick Township (having entered land here in 1833) and began pioneer life. Of their eleven children ten are yet living; a picture of the entire family is now in the possession of Henry. Our subject was married, December 4, 1856, to Margaret Bigharn, and to them were born five children, three of whom are now living: Mary A., Amos H. and Ida J. The deceased are Elmer J. and Jesse G. Mr. Thomas and family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
