The Brunswick News. (Brunswick, Ga.) 1906-2016: March 31, 1907 March 31, 1907
That fellow Shockey, who claims that he is walking from California to Jamestown, is
having considerable trouble. He served out a sentence in the city chain gang here
and now he is in jail in Savannah. The News of yesterday had the following about
him:
“Once more has the pedestrian trip of S. W. Shockey from California to the Jamestown
exposition been delayed by the law in Savannah. His departure from this city to
resume his march to Virginia may be delayed for a number of days unless he has
enough ready money to pay the fine which Recorder Schwarz promised him a few days
ago. At that time Shockey won the heart of the recorder with a smile when the
evidence introduced against him was that he had used the street directly in front of
the police headquarters for a bed. He also promised to do better than he had done
and to vacate Savannah with all speed. A day passed without any intimation reaching
the recorder that Shockey had not kept his word. But yesterday at 11 o'clock he was
arrested in the Union station and was sent to the police station. The same charge as
formerly was placed against him, that, of drunkenness. He claims he is on his way
overland from San Diego, California to be present at the opening of the Jamestown
exposition, probably to show himself as the champion walker. He will be arraigned in
police court this morning."
