([Grand Rapids, Mich.) 18??-1892: May 13, 1891 May 13, 1891 An odd looking bird was captured by the police on Canal-st. last night. He was surrounded by a curious crowd listening to his crazy ravings. He was taken to the police headquarters where he gave his name as Samuel W. Shockey, of Ada, Ohio. A little later Clerk Peck went into the cell room and was attracted by an unusual sound in the cell. Striking a light he discovered Shockey hanging in his cell by a rope made of his shirt. He was hastily taken out of the noose. He said concerning the matter that he had tried to hang himself by his suspenders, but failed, as they broke. He had tried to butt his brains out, and had cut his head quite badly. He told his story in his sweet, insane way. He was formerly known as the "Boy Preacher" of Ohio, and claimed to be a graduate of Ohio Northwestern College. He had been separated from his wife, and three years ago his little girl died. Every few minute he would go off on a tangent, and moan about his little girl. He said that he had been a revivalist, and a soldier in the regular army at Ft. Worth, Texas. Last summer he was sun-struck and went crazy. He was taken to the Cook County Hospital and kept there till this spring. He admits that he is crazy and says he will kill himself :as soon as possible. He says he has tried several times. His last engagement was with a museum at Chicago, as lecturer. He speaks Spanish, Italian and occasionally would spring a Latin or Greek quotation.
