(Brunswick, Ga.) 1906-2016: April 17, 1907 April 17, 1907 Champion Walker Can’t Get to Jamestown In Time for the Opening. Without the presence of S. W. Shockey, traveling phrenologist and champion long distance walker, the Jamestown exposition will open on schedule time, though, perhaps, great regret will be expressed over his non-arrival. He says he left San Diego, Cal., last Christmas and has walked as far as Savannah, intending to march on to Jamestown with flying colors on the opening day. But a fondness for whiskey and a combination of thirteens put his plans to the bad and for the next thirty days Mr. Shockey will educate a thirst in the Chatham county jail. Shockey was recently in Brunswick, where he was also delayed for several days, by being compelled to serve a sentence on the city chain gang for being drunk and disorderly. By the time he finishes his sentence in Savanna the exposition will be open and Shockey will have lost his bet.
