E. Stumm After a long and painful illness Mrs. Malissa Stumm, widow of the late Calvin E. Stumm, died at her home on South Main street on Sunday evening, May 22, 1898. In her death the life of a noble wife and mother has closed. Her affliction has been so great that it called forth the earnest sympathy of a wide circle of friends and her death is but a release from suffering. She has lived here nearly her whole life and departs from earth universally respected by those who knew her. No one on earth can know what she has suffered in life and her joy and reward in the great beyond certainly ought to be great. Malissa Van Buskirk was born in Carroll county September 27, 1838, and was therefore 59 years, 7 months and 25 days old at the time of her death. Her father died when she was quite young and her mother, Jane Van Buskirk, moved to Hardin county soon after and in about 1846 she was married to Samuel Lantz, the father of Wm. and Allen Lantz and Mrs. Thos. Hubble. Deceased was married to Calvin E. Stumm on July 4, 1861, and to this union three children were born and all were present when their mother was called home; they are Ewing, of Hutchinson, Kan., Mrs. Nora Steward of Newark, and Miss Wilhelmina, who has patiently and bravely cared for her mother during her long illness. Funeral services were held at the house yesterday at 10 a.m. conducted by her pastor, Rev. Z. B. Campbell, followed by interment at Woodlawn. Her memory will be precious to her children and her life will be to all an example of loving sacrifices.
