Loutzenhiser on Friday morning, April 24th, 1891. Rebecca Stumm, widow of Philip Stumm, deceased, aged 88 years, 4 months and 23 days. Deceased was born in Springhill township, Fayette county, Pennsylvania on Dec. 1st, 1802. She was married June 10th, 1826 in that county at the home of Jeremiah Burchinal, by Peter Stentz, a Justice of the Peace. Her husband, Philip Stumm, died Sept. 26th, 1854, aged 55 years, and was interred at the Klingler cemetery, near the Reformed church, 2 miles west of Ada, where her remains were laid beside those her her husband, on Sunday, April 26th, after a discourse from a text from the 14th chapter of St. John, first verse, by Rev. Z. B. Campbell, of the 1st Presbyterian church, Ada, Ohio. She was of Scotch-Welsh descent, her great grand-parent Burchinal having emigrated to America about 1633, settling with the Colony established by Lord Baltimore and his son Cecil adjacent to the Chesapeake Bay, known as Maryland. They were Catholics and left their native land on account of persecution, settling first in Virginia, thence to the colony governed first by Leonard Calvert, brother of Lord Baltimore. Her mother's maiden name was Horn whose ancestors came from Wales many years ago, settling in the state of Delaware. She was the mother of six sons and one daughter who survive her. Besides her seven children, she reared two grandchildren and two adopted children making eleven children for whom she cared and protected. Philip and Rebecca Stumm with their family moved from Pennsylvania in April 1852 to Ashland county, Ohio and in April 1853 re-moved to Hardin county, settling on a partialy improved farm 8 miles north-west of Johnstown (Ada) and in the Fall of 1858 the widow and three sons, C.E., L.F. and P.W., moved to Ada where she remained, excepting a few years spent on the farm, until seven months prior to her death when she was re-moved to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Loutzenhizer who kindly cared for her in her last illness.
