Quarterly of 1933-VolXXI. begins. "It is located upon the John Mattern farm (this part being now owned by Freshwater),near McKee's School and Conway Station, on the Cadiz branch of the Pa. R>R>, about two and one-half miles from Cadiz, Ohio. I suggest that the following inscriptions be published for the sake of preservation:" John Mattern[ died ] June 7, 1861 in the 84 yr of his age....."Hear what the voice from heaven proclaims For all the pious dead Sweet is the saviour of their names and soft their sleeping bed.". Foot-stone bears initials:J.M. Nancy N. [wife of ] John Mattern died March 6, 1863 aged 80 years and 7 mos....."Dearest mother thou hast left us Here thy loss is deeply felt But 'tis God that haft bereft us He can all our sorrows heal. Footstone bears the initials N.N.M. The following was quite worn and barely deciphered: Jane Mattern [Feb 11, 1830(?) aged 16. (she was likely a daugh of above John and Nancy.) Shadrach Tipton [died] July 17, 1822, in the 68th yr. of his age. Footstone bears initials: S.T. (He was doubtless the father of Nancy N. Tipton, wife of John Mattern. The following were evidently his children: Julia Ann Tipton died May 31, 1821 in the 13th year of her age. Eliza Tipton {died}, Jul 29th 1822 in the 18 Yr of her age. Richard Tipton {died} July 30 1822 in the 6th yr of his age. This one was evidently the brother of Nancy N. Tipton Mattern: Edmund Tipton [died] Oct 25.1861 aged 84 Y. 1 month 5 days. Footstone bears initials:E.T. Mary Tipton [Died]July 22, 1871 aged 85 yrs & 26 days. Footstone initials:M.T. She was likely wife of Edmund.. The following was prob. a nephew of Nancy N. Tipton Mattern. Albert [son of] W. & J. Tipton [died] Nov 14, 1843 aged 1 y & 24 days. "There is no evidence of the relationship of the following to the Mattern family but they may have been connected with the Tipton family: In memory of[Mary] wife of John Ross [died] Dec 9 1842 aged 41 yrs 7 mos 17 ds. Mary McCabe [died] Nov 5, 1829 in the 77th yr of her age. Harriet Hall Died May 14th 1850 aged 16 yrs 5 mos &27 days. Elizabeth Hall Died Jan 22, 1838 aged 10 yrs 5 mos &13 days. ******This cemetery is so hidden that it would have been missed had it not been specially called to my attention. From the road about 300 yards away it looks like a clump of trees and bushes. Under the name of Shadrick, Shadrach Tipton appears in the 1790 Census of Huntingdon Co Pa. as the head of a family consisting of one free white male of 16 yrs and upwards, one free white male under16 yrs (evidently above Edmund) and two free white females including heads of families (dou btless Nancy N. Tipton, who later married John Mattern, and her mother). About 1805 John Mattern, son of George Mattern Sr. of Seven Stars, married Nancy and migrated to Harrison Co.,Oh. The Tiptons likely lived near the village named after them, between Tyrone and Altoona, now Blair Co., but formerly part of Huntingdon Co. It is possible that, like the matterns, they migrated from near Hagerstown, Md. soon after the Rev war." I, Mary McCartney, have tried to give this record exactly as it was recorded in the National Gen Quarterly of 1933- VolXX1. Any questions, email me at
