Hortell? First entered the service as a volunteer about July 1776. Marched from York County, Pennsylvania, the place of my residence, through Lancaster and Philadelphia in which place were detained for nearly 2 weeks for the purpose of equipping. Thence by water to Trenton, Princeton, and thence to Amboy, where we encamped for 2 months and a half, at the expiration of which time he was discharged, it being the full term of 3 months for which I had volunteered.” “I then returned home to York County, Pennsylvania, at which place I resided when I was drafted, and was my home during all the time I was in the army; from which place we marched in the latter part of December 1778? through Little York, Lancaster, and crossed the Schuylkill at the Valley Forge, thence to Bucks [or Berks] County, Pennsylvania, where we performed ___ camp duty and we placed sentinels on the public roads to prevent the carrying of provisions to the English, then in Philadelphia. I remained in Bucks County until some time in March, at which time I was discharged, the full term of 3 months being completed for which I was drafted. In the last tour were Captain Samuel Ewing, Lieutenant Robert Wilson and Lieutenant George ?Stokely. I was a sergeant. The ensigns I cannot recollect.” “The next winter I was in Lancaster with my team. I had hauled a load of whiskey to Lancaster for one of my neighbors, at which place they pressed me to haul provisions from Philadelphia to the North River. I continued in that service for 3 months, at the expiration of which time I was discharged.” Interrogatories: I was born on the ?5th of December, 1752, in York County, Pennsylvania. I have no record of my age. It is recorded in my father’s Bible which he gave to a brother that resided some place in Kentucky. I was living with my father, as I have noted, in York County, Pennsylvania [at the times of his enlistment]. I removed from thence to Baltimore County, Maryland. I also lived at Baltimore for 2 years. I next removed to Frederick County, Virginia, not far from Winchester for about 4 years and a half. I next moved to Washington County, Pennsylvania. From there to Athens Township, Harrison County, Ohio. From thence to Moorefield Township, state and county last aforesaid, where I still reside. I volunteered the first tour, the second I was drafted and the 3rd time I was in the service (as a waggoner) I was pressed. [The officers that I knew were] Captain George McCarter, 1st Lieutenant Samuel Brady, 2nd lieutenant I cannot recollect his name, Ensign Hallimus Hortell, Colonel John Anderson…” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/oh/harrison/military/revwar/pensions/geery26gmt.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ohfiles/ File size: 3.5 Kb
