FORMER RESIDENT DIES IN VIRGINIA; TAUGHT MANY YRS. MISS KATE CODDINGTON WAS GRADUATE OF LOCAL SCHOOL. Erk Blazer has received word of the death of his cousin, Miss L. Kate Coddington, 68, who graduated from the Greenfield schools in 1896 and who will be remembered by many of the older residents of the community. Her death occurred in Roanoke, Virginia, May 26, following a week’s illness. Miss Coddington was born and reared in Greenfield and was a granddaughter of Samuel Mains. The family left here nearly 50 years ago. She had been teaching in the Roanoke schools for the past 20 years and was to have begun her period of retirement within two weeks from the time of her passing. Before going to Virginia, she taught in the Berea, Ky., schools. BEREA COLLEGE PREXY OFFICIATES. President Wm. Goodell Frost, of Berea College, officiated at the funeral rites in Berea Tuesday, May 29. The Berea Citizen carried a biographical sketch of Miss Coddington written by Dr. Frost. He said in part: “Kate Coddington taught in our Public School and Berea College secured her for its Foundation School for nine good and growing years. She had the inner call to teach – sympathy for the learner, and a sense of the use and value of the things which were being learned. Her pupils became perpetual investigators. Hundreds of men and women whose homes are scattered from Maine to California will learn that we are doing here today and will say, ‘Miss Coddington made me love to read and study’.” Miss Coddington is survived by her brother, H. W. Coddington, Roanoke, and by her mother, who is 96 years of age.
