The Highland weekly news. Highland County, Ohio 1853-1886: Nov. 28, 1861
On the 13th inst., at the residence of Samuel Duckwall, in Danville, Ohio, after a
brief illness, Mrs. Nancy Eakins, in the 74th year of her age. The deceased was born
in Mifflin county, Pa., in 1788 and moved with her father's family (Oliver Ross's)
to Highland county in 1800, when it was a perfect wilderness, with no inhabitants,
save the wild beasts of the forest and the native indian, when both sexes alike were
familiar with the realities and hardships of frontier life, and were compelled to
endure great fatigue and privations in the dense forest with no houses for their
protection but such that were rudely constructed of logs, hewn out by their own
industry. This is life personified...
