It's about my gg-grandmother who came to Nebraska in 1865. Here's a bit of her story. "Grandmother and Grandfather left for Nebraska in 1865 and settled near Shelton. The sod house was up along the warm slough in the trees along the small ridge. Grandfather was ailing. Usually the people are careful to build the walls thick and strong of a sod house. Shortly after Grandfather died (in 1877) a wall caved in and all but smothered Grandmother and Uncle James, who was a 3 month old baby in the crib. Many Indians lived around there near what was called the warm slough. Sometimes they came to the house to buy a cup full of sugar from Grandma. Grandfather always warned her not to kill an Indian or he would strike back. She always answered, I won't unless they hurt my children." This was written in 1969 by a 75 year old cousin who was a granddaughter of Mary. The old soddie has been gone for years, but the grove of trees is still there. Just to the south is the farm that Mary's oldest son bought and farmed in the 1880's. Still farmed by family members!!
