LAFFER was born in Middletown, Holmes Co., Ohio, Sept, 30th, 1837. When an infant a year old his parents removed to Sandyville, Tuscarawas Co., O. There he lived his boyhood, and at the age of 14, entered Allegheny College. He left college in 1854. After an absence of four years returning to the college, he graduated in the class of 1860, and going to Decatur Alabama, taught school during the winter of 1861, in the fall of 1861 he accepted the position of principal of the grammar school at Salem, 0. Remaining there one year, he left the school to take the chair as principal of the Willoughby Collegiate Institute. He continued here till 1865, when he came to Meadville and entered the wholesale and retail drug business, in which he has continued since. Mr. Laffer has been for some years Secretary of the Board of Trustees of Allegheny College. He was married July 24th, 1862, to Miss E. W. Callender, daughter of the late Norman Callender.
