James Riley Reynolds was born in Ripley, Brown county, Ohio, December 1, 1820, and after a short illness from pneumonia he died at his home on South Main Street on Thursday, March 12th, at 8 p.m., aged 82 years, 2 months and 25 days. He came to Danville, Illinois, with his parents in 1831 and after a short stay they crossed the father of waters for the state of Iowa, locating first in Cedar County, later in Linn county and thence to Davenport, where they tarried over winter. In the spring of 1845 they again started in search of a home, which Mr. Reynolds found in the vicinity of his homestead, three miles southeast of Maquoketa. Here he entered from the government a half section or more of land, parts of which he later assigned to parents and brothers. In 1849, in company with others, he crossed the plains to California, practically making the long journey on foot, driving four yoke of oxen taking six months and eleven days. He mined the American and Yuba rivers with success. He returned to Iowa in January, 1853, and on the 15th of December the same year he was married to Miss Susan Gordon, who came from Huron county, Ohio, and located on the homestead previously pre-empted. This union was blessed with six children-four sons and two daughters, of whom Davis, Lyman and Charles, all of Maquoketa, and Mrs. Grace Spencer of Davenport, Iowa and Nettie Stultz of East Moline, Illinois, together with the aged wife mourn the loss of a loving and indulgent husband and father. He was the last survivor of a family of thirteen children before he was taken to his last rest. Funeral services were held at the home on South Main Street on Sunday at 2 p.m. and burial in Mt. Hope cemetery, Rev. F. Boomershine officiating.
