His real name was William Starr, as listed in the Census of 1840 in Ross Township. The top name on the stone is William Locke, the name under which he served during the Revolution. He took the alias because he had been impressed into the British Army against his will, and when the ship reached Long Island, he deserted. He went to Frederick County, Virginia, where he joined the Militia in 1779 and served as a private in the Independant Company of Light Dragoons. He was engaged in the siege of Yorktown, and was discharged in Sept. 1781. The stone reads: "William Locke - Pvt Va Militia - Mar 1, 1744 + Mar 11, 1843 - also known as - William Starr". Additional Comments: I was told that the stone was ordered by the Ohio Historical Society. It was photographed and sent to me in 2009 (I think), as a "Random Act of Genealogical Kindness".
