Vernon Republican, 14 Dec 1897 Mr. Henry Brokaw, a retired farmer and pioneer of the county, died at his home in Centerburg, where he had been a prominent citizen for many years, very suddenly yesterday morning of heart failure. He retired the evening before feeling as well as usual, but about three o’clock in the morning his wife discovered he was suffering from heart failure. She helped him to turn over, but before help could arrive he was dead. Mr. Brokaw was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, Feb 10, 1814, and was therefore in his eighty-fourth year. He moved to this county in his eighteenth year and settled on a farm near Fredericktown, where he lived for many years, and he served a number of terms as constable of Liberty Township. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Louisa Coffing, and to them were born twelve children, of whom eight survive. At the death of his first wife in 1875, Mr. Brokaw moved to Centerburg, where he has since resided. His second wife was Miss Lucy DeBolt, and of this union one daughter was born. He is survived by his wife and the following children: William Brokaw, Bertha Brokaw, Mrs. Maria McCracken and Mrs. Mollie Riley of Centerburg, Francis I. and Elmer J. Brokaw of Lansing, Mich.; Charles Brokaw and Mrs. Emma Osborn of near Sparta and Mrs. Effie E. Bedell of this city. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. For over fifty years Mr. Brokaw was a consistent member of the United Brethren church at Red Hill, Morrow County. He was a thrifty businessman and a good citizen, and had accumulated quite a store of the world’s goods. The funeral services will be held at Hedding chapel, Morrow County, at 11 o’clock, tomorrow morning, conducted by Rev. Joshua Crawford.
