Lake & Company The first settler in Fayette Township was Revolutionary War veteran William Davidson, who arrived in 1798, nearly two decades before the township was established. By 1840, settlers included family names of Ankrim, Adkins, Brammer. Crawford. Corn, Daniels, Drury, Ferguson, Freeman, Hall, Howell. Koons, McClure. Sutton, Ward and Winters. In 1940, the population had risen to 2.930, then nearly tripled over the next four decades to 8,826 persons by 1980. Fayette's Burlington was the county's first seat of government with a post office, courthouse and stone jail. Burlington's boat landing prompted its early growth. Large prosperous farms of the river valley began shrinking after World War I into truck gardens. Following WWII, rising land values caused these smaller farms to be displaced by housing subdivisions, industry and shopping centers. One of South Point District's school buildings, Burlington Elementary, is in Fayette. A portion of Dawson-Bryant School District occupies northern Fayette. In 1941, Buckeye Ordnance Works was located just west of the Fayette line in South Point. After WWII. the plant became an Allied Chemical facility and influenced growth on through the mid-70's, after which it became South Point Ethanol. The Allied plant, with 1,300 employees at one time, helped bankroll family livelihoods, businesses and schools. US 52 was rerouted in 1960 from near the river, back to the hill area on a four-lane corridor. West Huntington Bridge near Sybene. built in the late 1960s was soon followed by construction of K-Mart Shopping Center. Although the creek valleys in Fayette's hills are heavily populated, much of the hill lands still contain pastures, and apple and peach orchards. Fayette is Ohio's most southern township. It contains the county's only airport, has two township fire departments with stations at Burlington and Sunrise, and also is served by a village fire department in South Point. Percentage-wise, Fayette had the largest population growth of any Lawrence County township from 1940to 1980. The last five years has seen yet another serge in growth with the addition of Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. That brought in a modern mall alongside Wal-mart, with the large Lowe's superstore. All these new changes has caused an awareness in the community with the residents forming a group called "Burlington Concerned Citizens Group". Their purpose is to promote better living condtions and are now trying to unite Burlington as a town.
