Court of Comm. Pleas, March Term 1833 On this 11th, day of March 1833, personally appeared in open court before the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas of said county, now sitting Henry Mannon, a resident of Windsor township in the county of Lawrence aforesaid, age 73 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath, make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7, 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers & served as herein stated-- 1st-- That about the first day of June, he believes, 1780 - at Henry County, Virginia, he entered the service, under Capt Brice Martin being drafted as a militia man for the term of three months, mustered or joined the company of Stephen Lyon, at the S.W. part of the county -- Capt Letcher had just been killed at his own house by British & Tories -- went to that settlement -- & searched that section of county in order to find the enemy -- remained about two months -- received a discharge as per a term of three months service -- Col. Penn, Col. Stephen Lyon, Major [??] Astin (or Austin), Capt Peter Huston an officer who served at the same time -- Did not find any of the enemy -- was in no battle -- 2, Then 1st of March 1781 he was again drafted to perform a tour of three months -- from the same Henry County - entered the service under Capt David Lenier, (Lieu James Pretty, Ensign John Watkins) went to Guilford Court house - got to Guilford the day after the battle between Genl Greene & Lord Cornwallis - heard the firing -- joined Genl Greene near the town -- from that time remained with Genl Greene's army till about the middle of June, when he was discharged -- was gone from home some days over three months -- marched from Guilford to Camden where there was some skirmishing -- remained there till discharged 3 In October 1781 -- about the 1st day of the month, he was again drafted from same Henry County -- to perform another tour of Three months, entered the service under Capt James Tarrance (Randall Hall only Lieunt) other officers don't recollect -- marched to Winchester to guard some prisoners, which were at Henry Court House -- They were removed to Winchester -- There were about 100 prisoners he believes -- It was very cold weather Snowed almost every day & a great length of time was taken up in the service -- he was discharged in Winchester County & returned home, he served the whole term of three months except a few days -- got home the night of 24th December 4-- In 1783 -- in the month of June, the day not recollected -- at Henry County Virginia -- The Tories & British Deserters were constantly committing depredations, stealing horses, burning, plundering -- a company was raised by Col. Lynch, P[?] Hampton was Capt James Hampton, Ensign James Richardson -- the declarant volunteered or joined the Company for Eight months & served the whole term. Ranged the counties of in North section -- went into Carolina to Lorde [?] town on Dan River -- Pittsylvania -- Halifax, & several other [??] -- Caught many Tories & whipped them severely -- During this service he was not out all the time -- but went out several times whenever called on during the term -- was not at home above one month he believes in all during the eight months -- he was regularly discharged at the end of the term -- 5th During the war he was employed about one month guarding Governor Patrick Henry -- and his son in law Capt John Fountaine -- Patrick Henry lived in two miles of this declarant -- & was very much afraid of the Tories -- In answer to the interrogatories he answers as follows -- To the 1-- He was born in Buckingham County, in the state of Virginia the 8 October 1759 -- 2-- he has no record of his age, 3-- Resided in Henry County during the whole term of the war & about ten years after, then removed to Franklin County, Virginia where he resided about nine or ten years -- then removed to Kanawha County where he resided about 20 years -- then removed to the place where he now resides where he has been twelve years 4-- was drafted at all times except the eight months term when he volunteered -- 5-- Brigade Major Tucker -- who reviewed & put us into the 4th Regt he thinks of Genl Greene's army -- Genl Lamson -- Col Wm Washington -- of light horse -- served with him awhile Genl Green commander in Chief & Col Lee was with him -- Does not remember the number of any Comp or Regt he served in, except the 4th Regt [??] 6-- He was regularly discharged at the end of every term by written discharges - but by whom signed -- he does not recollect they have long since been lost -- declarant cannot read-- 7-- There are many in my Township who can testify as to my character & their belief of my service -- I will name Esquire Peter McKefrin [?], Edward Monnahon, Mary Mannon, & General Joseph L Davidson & William Holderby He hereby relinquishes every claim whichever to a pension or amenity except the present & declared that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any state. W [??] Clerk } We Joseph Davidson & William Holderby duly hereby certify we are well acquainted with Henry Mannen, who has submitted & sworn to the above declaration. That we believe him to be 73 years of age.
