I chose this one because many of my relatives, including parents and grandparents, are buried here. Brownsville is a very small village located on Rt. 40 in eastern Licking County. The cemetery is located at the end of First Street, about 2 blocks south of Rt. 40. It is on a hillside with a few cedar trees still standing. The cemetery is owned and maintained by the Brownsville Cemetery Association which was incorporated in 1909. However the cemetery is much older. It remains in use today and is very well maintained. As with all old cemeteries, many of the stones have deteriorated to the point where they are difficult or impossible to read completely. And some graves do not have a marker. Marjorie Salyer who lives in Brownsville did the previous transcription in 1976. I compared my readings with hers and found many discrepancies. I then went back and reread these stones. Some discrepancies were resolved and some were not. I know how important it is to be accurate and I have strived for accuracy. However, I also know that all information on the stones and in this transcription may not be accurate. For instance, my great-grandfather's stone has the wrong name on it. Information in brackets [ ] is to clarify or include information that is not on the stones. All veterans' graves are marked with flag holders. I have included this information when military information is not on the stones. Betty Smart is president of Brownsville Cemetery Association. I wish to thank her for her assistance and the Brownsville Cemetery Association for allowing me to complete this project. If you have any questions or additional information, you may email me at dkinney@alltel.net.
