I came across her notes that she had written for a presentation at the Frazeysburg Homecoming in 1936. Thought you or someone might find it interesting. This is a portion that she had written. "IN 1817, ELIZABETH GLASCOCK LEMERT, THE WIDOW OF LEWIS LEMERT,EMIGRATED TO PERRY TOWNSHIP, LICKING COUNTY, OHIO. SHE WAS THE OWNER OF A LARGE TRACT OF LAND HERE, AND WITH HER SIX SONS, BEVERLEY, LABAN, LEROY, THADDEUS, ABNER AND FERDINAND AND HER ONLY DAUGHTER MINERVA (WHO LATER MARRIED WM. BROWN) AND SEVERAL OF THEIR FRIENDS EMIGRATED FROM THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY IN VA. THEY TRAVELED IN COVERED WAGONS OVER THE SHENANDOAH TRAIL. PASSED THROUGH THE FERTILE VALLEYS TO THE RIGHT, WHERE THE MENDENHALLS AND BLIZZARDS HAD ALREADY CLAIMED LARGE GRANTS OF LAND, OVER THE ROCKY BALD HILLS UNTIL THEY REACHED THE UPLAND VALLEYS, WATERED BY BRUSHY FORK AND WAPATOMICA CREEKS. HERE THE 42 YEAR OLD WIDOW LEMERT LAID OUT IN OLD VA. STYLE ELIZABETHTOWN, NOW PERRYTON. ONE LONG STREET 24 - QUARTER ACRE LOTS ON EACH SIDE, DIVIDED BY INTERVENING ALLEYS INTO BLOCKS OF 4 LOTS EACH, AND LONG ALLEYS RUNNING THE WHOLE LENGTH OF THE STREET AT THE BACK OF EACH OF THE TWO ROWS OF LOTS. SHE DONATED AN ACRE ABOVE THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE TOWN PLOT FOR A SCHOOL SITE, BUILT A LOG DISCIPLE CHURCH ON THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF HER OWN BLOCK OF LOTS. ALSO ESTABLISHED A BURYING GROUND ABOVE THE SCHOOL SITE, AND GAVE IT TO THE TOWN FOR "AYE". HER OWN YOUNG SON THADDEUS WAS THE FIRST ONE BURIED THERE. SHE BUILT THE OLD YELLOW BRICK STILL OWNED AND OCCUPIED BY HER GREAT GRANDSON, DR. WM. SEWARD. ANOTHER GREAT GRANDSON DR. IRA SEWARD RESIDES ON THE OLD LEMERT-BROWN SEWARD FARM A GREAT GRAND-DAUGHTER OF ELIZABETH LEMERT, MRS. HATTIE SEWARD SCHOOLER HAS MADE FRAZEYSBURG HER HOME FOR MANY YEARS AND HER BUSY LIFE OF DEVOTION TO HER TOWN AND FAMILY IS TYPICAL TO THAT OF HER MATERNAL ANCESTOR. ELIZABETHTOWN WAS ALL SETTLED UP IN 1817 AND HAS NEVER GROWN ANY LARGER." Another exerpt read....HORACE FAIRALL, FATHER OF HYATT, GRAFTON,AND WESLEY FAIRALL , WAS ONE OF THE EARLIEST PIONEERS TO THIS AREA. GRAFTON FAIRALL MARRIED HANNAH CUSTER, DAUGHTER OF JACOB CUSTER AND ELIZABETH "BETSY" LEATHERMAN. JACOB CUSTER WHO SETTLED NEAR ELIZABETHTOWN ON THE SHENANDOAH TRAIL ABOUT 1820 WAS KILLED BY HIS HORSES RUNNING AWAY ON THE OLD KILPATRICK ROAD. HE OWNED A LARGE TRACT OF LAND BOTH IN MUSKINGUM AND LICKING COUNTY ON THE "RIM". My g-g grandfather Joseph Miller went to Elizabethtown in 1827 - died there in 1891. The Custers were there too. I have tried for over two years to locate information on my family. If you ever come across any of these names I would love to hear from you. Many thanks. It is written in my g-grandmother's handwriting for her speech to those in attendance at the Frazeysburg Homecoming Festivities, Frazeysburg, Muskingum County, Ohio. It is dated August 27, 28, and 29, 1936. Sincerely, Kathy E. Mulvihill, Email: REKMUL@aol.com Donated April 1997.
