OBITUARY
BENTON DAVIS

Benton Davis, 83, retired farmer of Mary Ann township, died Saturday at 5:30 p. 
m. in the City hospital where he had been a patient since July 3, for treatment 
of a heart ailment.

Born Dec. 18, 1861, in Licking county he was the son of Tilburry and Martha 
Davis.  His wife, Mrs. Sarah Matilda Davis, died March 10, 1924, and the 
following children survive:  Oliver Davis of California, John of New 
Philadelphia, Charles of the home, Mrs. Mary Claggett of St. Louisville, Mrs. 
Etha Frost of Frazeysburg, Mrs. Eunice Scott St. Louisville, Mrs. Russell Lees 
near Newark, Mrs. Wealthia Giblin of Newark; also 22 grandchildren and 10 great-
grandchildren.  A daughter Mr. Quilie Claggett and two sons, Alphonso and David 
Davis, are deceased.  A sister, Mrs. Amanda Grumm of Rocky Fork, also survives.

The body is at Criss Brothers funeral home and the cortege will leave at 1:15 
p. m. Wednesday for Smith Chapel church were services will be held at 2 p. m.  
Rev. Allen Wilson will officiate and burial will be made in the church cemetery.

Additional Comments:
My mother, Martha I. Claggett Baughman, gave me a copy of this obituary shortly 
after the death of her sister, Etha L. Claggett Merrick Billman Layton.  Benton 
Davis was their grandfather.  Their mother was Mrs. Mary Claggett of St. 
Louisville, Ohio.
