He came to Jackson county at the age of 21 and settled near Emeline. He was married March 6th, 1868 to Fredericka Brown, who was born in Wurttemberg, Germany. She came to this country when she was two years old. There was born to this union, five children, all of whom are living. Will and and Alva Swift and Mrs. Jacobs at home, who have cared for their father during his declining years, also Mrs. Mina Saunders and Dr. Fred Swift of Maquoketa. There are five grandchildren and one brother, Edward Swift of Stanwood, who attended the funeral. His wife, preceded him in death ten years ago, she passing away on March 19, 1911. Mr. Swift was a man of exemplary habits and enjoyed the best of health until about a year ago when his age commenced to tell on him and health failed, especially the last 3 months, he failed very fast and passed away, at 9:30 a.m., January 21st.
