He said he never knew anything about Grampa Soules early history. In my searching, I found that he had 3 children. My parents only knew of one, My Dad's mother's mother named Maude Soules. I know that David Nees Soules is the correct spelling. My Dad says he was always told that Grampa Soules was born in Bellefontain, Ohio. I found that he was in the 96th Regiment OVI in the Civil War from 1862 till 1865. He joined in Delaware County, Ohio. I have forms to send and get his Civil War records, which I will do real soon. Sometime after the war, he moved to Pleasantville, In. and married Louisa J. Smith. I haven't found those records yet- there are 2 Pleasantvilles. With her he had the 3 children. Maude Soules, Lizzie Soules, and #3. Maude Soules married William Toliver and they had one child, my GrandMother. She was born Iris Glenn Toliver in 1892. Maude died in 1903 and William died in 1906. So Grandma went to live with Grampa Soules. We know very little about her parents. Grampa Soules had moved to Clay City Illinois where he bought the old Courthouse and made it his home. His Death Certificate says he lived there for 64 years. Louisa had died and he remarried Mary Alice Enlo Soules. There may have been another wife in there. Mary Alice was married 4 times altogether. I have his will. He left half to Mary Alice + the house, and the other half to 2 guys named VanMatre. We don't know who they are. He got mad at Grandma and left her $1 in the will. The VanMatre guys were to inherit the house after Mary Alice died. Mary Alice was never married to anyone named VanMatre. More mystery. There was a newspaper article about Grampa Soules in The Clay County Advocate in 1976. It was submitted by a man who I don't know and he has died with no known family. Grampa Soules was the oldest living Civil War Veteran in Clay City. He died in 1937, 4 days before he was to turn 95 of Pneumonia. He is written about in two Illinois books- Sailor Springs History and The History of Clay County, Illinois. Here is the interesting part. He was a harness maker by trade. One book said he could be found a stitchin and a mendin. He was called Uncle Davey by the townspeople. Here is another interesting fact- He was a little guy-weighed 96 pounds. Dad says he was quite a character. I have several pictures of him. It is quite interesting how I acquired the Bible. I will tell you sometime when I have more time. It almost got thrown out in 1958. I saved it. I was in the fourth grade. There are also some pictures of people whom I suspect might be Gordons. We have a lot of sharing to do sometime. I hope to meet you sometime. More Later.
