Followed Joseph Gordon through all the census records from 1820 to 1860. Quite a surprise to find him still living in 1860. He was living alone. None of the people who were with him in 1850 were anywhere near to be found. Am sending copies of the census records. I did find the Obenchains though. Vandiver L. Obenchain m Mary A. Ingerson on 17 Jan 1858 in Wyandot County, OH. Later he is found living in Putnam County, OH near or in the Village of Bellmore with his wife Mary, and daughter, Eva and son, Rousew. A Sally Obenchane, listed as a domestic servant, is also living in the household. Vandiver is by then 33 years of age and a successful Harness Maker. From the IGI it appears that there quite a few of them in the general area, mostly from Logan, Clark, Lucas, and Hardin Counties. However, I did not find any connecting link that I could recognize to the Davis or Gordon family. For the time being, this current research leads me to believe that the above Vandiver was an adopted child of Mary and Joseph Gordon. He is most likely the child of the widow, Mary Oberchain, 55, of VA (this could be a link to the Davis family, for Mary came from VA as well) Living with her are her daughter, Mary, 25, and Amanda 18 in the 1860 census. Besides Vandiver, living with Joseph and Mary Gordon in 1850, I also found a Susannah Oberchain, 14, living with a Thomas Nevels in McArthur Township. She is most likely a sister of Vandion's, and might even be the above Sally, who was living with Vandiver in Putnam County. I did not have as much luck tracing your ancestor though. Did get a clear copy of the 1850 Logan County census though and the middle initial could be read N as well as W. A. Saul Shaul 42 in the 1850 census did catch my attention. He was living in McArthur Township with his family and his wife too was from VA, but even more important his occupation was listed as Sadler, the same occupation that Vandiver followed in Putnam County. He lived very near Phebe Harrod, who also came from VA (a possible link to the Davis line) and Samuel Harrod, who came from PA. Interesting in light of the middle names of Oliver P. Gordon's daughters. There are many Souls in Hardin County and in the surrounding counties. So it is possible that one of these may emerge. Also found a couple of Sowells in the 1840 census of Logan County, Perry Twp. p. 7 Thomas and Cyrus were their names. Guess we will have to leave this search for another day. I was running out of time. I did read William H. Rosebrook's history again and found a very interesting line, "I then moved to Rushsylvania south of town on the John NEER farm where I lived four years. (Suppose he made a typo and it should read John Nees farm?) Just a thought. Are you sure of the Nees spelling for David's name? Might it be Neer? I''ll try to get all of this research copied and send to you. Great fun. Gerald *************OH-FOOTSEPS Mailing List***************************
