Dunn (né Leo John Dominick) died peacefully at his home in Naples, Florida, on March 30, 2006, at the age of ninety-four. Born on December 16, 1911 to Roc and Mary Kovac Dominick of Lorain, Ohio, Leo graduated from high school in Lorain and later attended the University of Cincinnati. As a young man he played trumpet in local clubs and orchestras with his brother, Rocque, a clarinetist, during the Big Band Era. In his twenties, Leo enjoyed the hustle and glamour of the hotel business; he worked for the Statler Hotels in Cleveland, Miami, and New York. In 1942 he was inducted into the Army, serving in World War II. Leo was eventually promoted to Master Sergeant, and in 1945 was tranferred to the 82nd Airborne Div. for occupation duty in Berlin where he established and ran an officers’ club for American servicemen. Honorably discharged in 1946, he earned a number of decorations including good conduct medal and three bronze service stars. After the war, Leo joined the Ohio Bell Telephone Co. as a salesman in Yellow Pages. He became National Sales Manager and retired from Ohio Bell thirty-five years later. A dapper dresser, he was known for wearing a fresh flower in the lapel of his suit every day. In 1951 he married Kathryn Barry Powers of Columbus, Ohio. They were married for fifty-two years and lived an active life together until her death in 2003. They resided in Rocky River, Ohio until 1977 and then retired to Naples, on the Gulf coast. Kay and Leo lived near the beach where he continued his hobbies: horticulture, reading, swimming and fishing. He was involved for many years in the Telephone Pioneers of America, serving as a local president in 1985-86. Leo was predeceased by his sister, Gisella Fertalj, in 1991 and his brother, Rocque, in 1977. He is survived by a step-daughter, Eileen Powers Carpenter of Lakewood, Ohio; four grandchildren (Kathleen Hull, Patricia Foster, Richard Hull, and Nancy McCormack); and eight great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include a nephew, John Fertalj, Jr. of Amherst and a niece, Evelyn Woskobnick of Lorain. A funeral mass will be held in Lorain on Monday, May 8 at St. Stanislaus Church, followed by a graveside rite of committal at Calvary Cemetery. The Rev. Kevin Shemuga will preside.
