Mezlak, 78, of Lorain died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital and Health Center after a long illiness. Born in Lorain, he lived in Elyria from 1939 until returning to Lorain in 1951. Mr. Mezlak retired in 1970 as a craneman in the open hearth department after 37 years with U.S. Steel Corporation, Lorain. He also had been a baker for Lerner and Spang bakeries, both in Lorain. A World War 11 Army Veteran, he served as a machine gunner in the Northern France and German Campaigns. He received the Purple Heart, The World War 11 Victory Medal and two Battle Stars. Mr. Mezlak directed and managed a 10-piece orchestra called The Vic Macks which performed in the Amherst and Avon areas during the late 1930s. He was a member of St. Vitus Catholic Church, Lorain, and United Steelworkers Union Local 1104; a life member of DAV Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 and American Legion Post 30, both in Lorain; and former captain of the Elyria American Legion Post 12 bowling team. He also enjoyed playing guitar and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Laura (nee Meo), to whom he was married 52 years; sisters, Katherine Kaye of Lorain and Joann White of Twin Falls, Ida. Mr. Mezlak was preceded in death by brothers, Michael, Theodore, Joseph, Frank, John and Rudy. Family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at John R. Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain where 3 p.m. parish rosary will be held. Services will be Wednesday 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by 10: a.m. Mass at St. Vitus Church. The Rev. Simon Nekic will be the Celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, where Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 DAV and American Legion Post 30 will conduct full military honors.
