Livingston, whose death was noticed in the last issue of the News, was born in 1824, on a plantation in the vicinity of Kingston, Jamaica, where his father was an extensive slave-holder. When Lawrence was a lad of nine years he was sent, with his older brother, to New York City for educational purposes. Some few years later James Fitch of Oberlin visited Jamaica as a missionary, and at his suggestion the two boys were sent on to Oberlin, as being a place of better moral atmosphere. Later, the father, influenced by his wife and Mr. Fitch, freed his seventy-five slaves, sold his plantation and came to Oberlin, where he settled on the place now known as the Jarvis farm, east of the city. In 1862 Lawrence Livingston was married to Miss Mary Read of Wellington, and settled on the farm in east Russia, where the family have since resided. In 1876 Mr. and Mrs. Livingston united with the First Church by letter from the Unity Church of east Russia. Mr. Livingston was a steadfast Christian and a faithful supporter of all good enterprises. His wife and two daughters, Mrs. W. J. Frost of Harvey, Ill., and Mrs. S. A. Rhodes of Henrietta, together with his brother Jasper, survive him. The funeral service was conducted by Dr. James Brand at the family home Wednesday afternoon.
