Madison County OhArchives History .....Daily Farm Journal By Daniel Boyer (DB) Foster; January 1901 Thru January 1904 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/oh/ohfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Deane McGuire deano_mac@yahoo.com February 16, 2010, 8:02 pm Notes on the following document: This Daily Farm Journal by Daniel Boyer (DB) Foster was transcribed from his hand-written journal which documents January 1901 thru January 1904. All contents were written by DB Foster with the exception of “Italicized” items that give descriptions and / or names of individuals noted and their relationship to DB Foster or the Foster family. Additional italicized notations of receipts and deposits were taken from ledgers written on the front and back pages and covers of the journal and inserted next to their specific dates or events. There were many additional entries in the ledgers, however they were either illegible or could not be referenced to a date or event and therefore were not included in the transcript. There are several illegible words and or sentences noted, as the document was written in pencil and is over 100 years old. DB’s first daughter Jennie was referred to as Jenny in many instances and for the sake of consistency they were changed to Jennie. On some occasions the weather description was moved to the first item, before the daily tasks. Other than those minor modifications, the transcript is a accurate representation as possible of the journal’s contents. There are very few misspellings, notably “Chaple”, that have not been corrected. The journal gives an interesting historical overview of farm life in Madison County at the turn of the century, including the amount of work required to maintain a working farm, notes on the daily weather, and the cooperation between fellow farmers and their families. There are many references to notable Madison County families, specifically; the Van Wagoner’s, Chenoweth’s, McClimans , Johnson’s and others. The Foster family farms were in southern Oak Run Township along the Bradford Creek. Many of the Foster family members referenced have markers in Bethel and Kirkwood cemeteries. One note to keep in mind, DB Foster was 73 years old when this journal was started in 1901 The journal was the property of Phyllis Foster Ryan, of London Ohio. Additional information supplied by Patricia Foster McGuire. Phyllis and Patricia are great granddaughters of DB Foster.
