Mrs. Elijah Bond 20 Dec 1804 to 6 Jan 1895 90y 17d Death of Mrs. Orpha Bond A happy meeting soon followed by a sorrowful parting. Nearly three weeks ago quite a number of the good people of the Congregational Church of Canfield, together with many elderly acquaintances and the surviving children of Mrs. Orpha Bond gave her a happy surprise at her residence in this place, to offer their congratulations and good cheer on the occasion of her 90th birthday anniversary. She had been for some days absent visiting in Leetonia and had only arrived at her home a few minutes before her many friends burst upon her with their hearty good wishes that her happy days might be prolonged for many years. This good old lady received these congratulations graciously and joyfully, and seemed as happy as the happiest in the enjoyment of good health and a contented mind. How quickly our joys and sorrows alternate! A few days after this pleasant event, Mrs. Bond, while engaged in reading, was suddenly smitten with apoplexy and a few hours afterward the spirit that animated and gave such a charm to a long and useful life, passed away Jan. 6th, 1895. “Aunt Orpha,” as she was familiarly called, was born in Connecticut, Dec. 20th, 1804, being a daughter of Lovel Parker, who with his family came to Ohio in 1816, settling in Kinsman, Trumbull county, where in 1830, she was married to her first husband, James Truesdale, and very soon thereafter settled in Canfield, where her husband engaged in the manufacture of edged tools. The business was of great advantage to Canfield and surrounding towns; but as the fruits of the energy and enterprise of Mr. Truesdale developed into success, he became by reason of exposure and over exertion, a helpless invalid, and a few years thereafter died in 1845, or about 50 years ago. On the 2nd day of April, 1856, Mrs. Orpha Truesdale married Mr. Elijah Bond. Mr. Bond is remembered by very many of our people as a man of intelligence and great moral worth, highly respected by all who knew him. He lived to a serene old age, and died on the 3rd day of March, 1878. The fruits of this first marriage referred to, was the birth of seven children, but only three lived to maturity, Hannah, the oldest, married Frederick Harrington, at present treasurer of Ashtabula county. She died a number of years ago. James L. Truesdale of Leetonia , who is well and favorably known as a public spirited and enterprising gentleman; and Julia, who married Mr. Barker of Rock Creek, O., who is also a highly respected citizen. Miss Hattie Bond is a step- daughter of the deceased, and deserves great credit for her devotion and care for the comfort of her aged step-mother. [By]J.
