He had been ill several months but pneumonia was the immediate cause of his death. Deceased was born in Greenford Oct. 26, 1853, a son of Lewis and Catherine Zuck Callahan. When a small boy his parents came to Canfield, where the remainder of his life was spent. As a young man he learned the carriage and wagon making trade in the shop of Wm. Corll on Lisbon street, near the Erie railroad, and in that vicinity he was afterwards for many years actively engaged in other lines of business. He became associated with the J. Sanzenbacher Tannery Co., the most important business enterprise in the village at the time, continuing with the company until he went into the hide business on his own account after erecting a building on land acquired near the Erie tracks and actively followed it until recent years. He also dealt extensively in real estate, of which he was a large holder. He was a member of the Methodist church, its strongest financial supporter and for many years a member of the official board. On May 20, 1877, [sic – or 20 May 1875] he was married to Miss Rebecca Sanzenbacher of Canfield, who survives, along with one sister, Mrs. C.W. Shaffer, of this place. A brother, J.L. Callahan died Feb. 17. The remains will be taken to the M.E. Church at noon Saturday and may be viewed by friends. Funeral services at 2 p.m. will be in charge of Rev. Glenn C. Cornell. Burial in the village cemetery.” Additional Comments: NOTE: Obituary 24 February 1939 for Rebecca Sanzenbacher Callahan states the wedding date as 20 May 1875 which is the correct year.
