"JACK" WASKO, 73 CAMPBELL - John J. "Jack" Wasko, 72 a lifelong Campbell resident passed away peacefully Wednesday with his family at his side. Jack was born June 29, 1932 in Campbell, a son of the late John A. and Julia (Onder) Washko. He was a 1950 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, where he excelled in both football and basketball. In 1949, he was the fullback selection for all Mahoning County as well as the North All-Star Football Team. He attended the University of Louisville and Youngstown State University. He served four years in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960 and is a veteran of the Korean War. While in the Navy, he crossed the Arctic Circle and became a full- fledged Royal Order of the Blue Nose, and also crossed the Equator, becoming a True and Loyal Son of Neptunus Rex. This is a rarity that sailors are able to complete both of these mysteries. In 1958 he graduated from the Pittsburgh Institue of Mortuary Science and completed his apprenticeship at the Shriver-Allison Funeral Home in Youngstown before joining the Putko-Rich-Wasko Funeral Home. In 1967, he became the proud owner of the Wasko Funeral Home, where he conducted several thousand funerals during his career, treating the funeral industry as a ministry rather than a business. Besides being a member of many church, civic, fraternal and community organizations, he most recently served as president of the St. John Cemetery Board. He also held memberships with the Local, State and National Funeral Directors Associations. In 1998, he was honored and inducted into the Campbell Memorial Athletic Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in football. He was an avid bowler and was a member of many leagues over the last 40 years and also sponsored many teams. He leaves many accomplishments and precious memories to be shared with his wife, the former Betty Ann Fiffick, whom he married Nov. 27, 1958; his three children, Robert J. Wasko of Youngstown, Jacqueline A Wasko (Mark) Shaw of Campbell and Bethanne Wasko of Poland; a grandson Ian Shaw of Columbus; two sisters, Virginia Gorski and Gladys (Cy) Balas, both of Poland; and many extended family members and friends. The family will receive friends from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Wasko Funeral Home. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. John Catholic Church.
