Utica, N.Y: Published for the author by Curtiss & Childs, printers. Author: E. Child Charles Childs, third son and child of Artimas and Hannah Ormsby Child, b. in Sharon, Windsor Co., Vt., Dec. 14, 1802, m. Dec. 12, 1837, Sallie Abbott, dau, of the late Daniel and Sallie Abbott, of Mantville, Medina Co., Ohio. For the first thirty years of his life, Mr. Charles Childs remained with his father, when old enough to do so aiding in the culture of the farm, and in the operation of a saw-mill. One who has never seen a farm in New England can scarce apprehend one of the most unceasing labors of farming in that region, the removal of stone from the fields, which the plough yearly upturns with a persistent uniformity unequaled by the crops sown after the ploughing; to gather up the stones was an early task for the farmers' boys, and those returning from the soft, alluvial loam culture of the West to look upon the old homesteads, marvel at the courage which continues to cultivate the stony hills and valleys. To this labor Mr. Childs was early inured, and the limited scope of the country schooling, snatched at intervals from farm toil and mill tending, was all the training he received. But it proved sufficient to develop in him earnestness, thoroughness and practical skillfulness. The very atmosphere imparted vigor, and the moral surroundings wrought out true nobility and sterling integrity. In the spring of 1833. Mr. Childs bade farewell to New England and purchased him a farm in La Fayette, Medina Co., Ohio. Here he became soon a prominent citizen, noted for his excellent judgment, wise counsels, indomitable energy and a rare gift of "keeping his own counsel." "Early in the history of the township, he was elected to the position of justice of the peace, and retained the office some thirty years. For many years postmaster; and while ever true to his political party (republican), he was cordially esteemed by all. In the home relations he proved himself equally the true man, loving tenderly, wife and children. He was heartily lamented when he 'ceased from his labors' at threescore years and ten, on the first of March. 1873." Child, E. (1881).
