From "History of North Washington" Published 1904 Ferry County Biographical Sketches --------------------------------------------------- JOHN W. McCANN John W. McCann who owns the second division of the town of Republic, is one of the best known mining men of Ferrycounty. Having been interested in this industry, both as a prospector and promoter for some time. He has hadwide experience in mining in various parts of the world and is a skillful and energetic man. John W. McCann was born in Meigs county, Ohio on June 4, 1856,being the son of William and Rebecca (Goff) McCann,natives of Virginia. They settled in Meigs county in theearly days and there remained until the father's deathin 1861. The mother lived there some time after that,then removed to Wisconsin, where she died in 1876. They were the parents of fifteen children. Our subjectreceived his education in the Albany High School andlater completed the same in the academy. >From sixteento twenty he operated his mother's farm then his motherhaving died, he journeyed west to the Black Hills inSouth Dakota. There he followed mining in variouscapacities until 1885, when he came to Spokane. Later,he went to Idaho and mined in the Couer d'Alene country. In 1887, we find him in Okanogan county and six yearslater, he sold his mining interests there and went tothe Kootenai district, in Canada. After that, we findhim operating in southern Oregon and in 1894, he went to the Yukon, making about five thousand dollars, placermining. He came back and located in the Boundarydistrict and soon began operation in what is now Ferrycounty. He located some of the first claims staked onthe Reservation, among which may be mentioned the Butte,the Boston, the Greater New York, the Lucky Two, all of which he patented, also the Home Claim, the Valley Group, and various others. Mr. McCann devotes his entire attention to handling his property, both real estate and mining, and is one of the progressive andleading men of the county. On August 4, 1899, Mr.McCann married Margaret Rekoske, and to this union onechild has been born, Beatrice. Politically, Mr. McCann is inclined to be Independent and Liberal.In fraternal affiliations he is connected with the A.F.& A.M. and the Eastern Star.
