The youngest was 4 years of age and the oldest 14. When received at the home they were but thinly clad. Their hair was a solid mat, having apparently never been combed. They were given a thorough washing, and while undergoing this process the four-year-old looked up into the face of the matron, and lisped, 'dad iss te first time I was ever washt." One of the other girls, when handed a broom, inquired what she was to do with it. She was told, and said, "I don't know how; the floors at our house are wet and muddy, and we never had a broom in the house.
