Grothjan, 80, Mayor of Celina for the past six years died suddenly whle shaving last Friday morning at his home in Celina. He was found lying on the floor in the bathroom by his granddaughter Mrs. George Smalley and a neighbor Mrs. William Evans. Mayor Grothjan was seemingly in good health and the best of spirits when he retired Thursday evening and had planned to do an errand for his daughter Mrs. Eulalia Riley at 9 o'clock. When he hadn't gone to the Gibbons hospital to see Mrs. Riley by 10 o'clock she became alarmed. She called the office at the City Hall and was told he hadn't come down yet. She then called home and getting no answer she telephoned Mrs. Smalley and Mrs. Evans. The priest and physician were summoned at once and the doctor said that he had been dead for several hours. Mayor Grothjan was just completing his third term in the office. He was born at Minster, September 12, 1859 and came to live in Celina at the age of 15 years. He was first in the blacksmith and wagon and carriage making business. For a period of over 20 years he and his son the late Jerome Grothjan were in the automobile business. Mayor Grothjan was a staunch Democrat. Thirty two years ago he was elected sheriff of Mercer county, serving two terms. For many years he was city treasurer and in 1934 he became Celina's Mayor. Mayor Grothjan was a devout Catholic, a faithful member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the Holy Name Society, the C. K. of O, the K. of C. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Rosa Grothjan, May 9, 1937, his son Jerome Grothjan died December 30, 1931 and one grandson John Grothjan is deceased. He was the last of a family of seven children. Surviving are his five children, Mrs Eulalia Riley at home, Mrs. Wes Anthony and Mrs. Harry Jutze of Cincinnati, Harold Grothjan of New York City, and Dr. Cletus Grothjan of Toledo, seventeen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and his daughter-in-law Mrs. Addie Grothjan.
