She was a loyal, compassionate and generous person all her life. She was always friendly to those she met and was known for her smile. Her strength, resilience and courage will live on in our hearts and as we all challenge ourselves to become a better person in her memory. Her family and friends who remain on God's earth will dearly miss her. She will stand firm in the hands of the Lord. Kate, as she was known by her many family and friends was bom April 20, 1919 in Springcreek Twp,, Miami County. She was raised and lived most of her life on Troy-Sidney Road in Springcreek Twp., Piqua. She was the oldest child of seven born to the late Forrest Edward and Mabel Estella (Clevenger) Cron. From her parents, she learned the value of family and hard work. On Sept. 9,1944, she married Harry Alvin Hopkins in the Piqua Congregational Christian United Church of Christ. Harry preceded her in death on Sept. 1,1991. Kate graduated from Piqua Central High School in 1939. After graduation, she attended Stayman's Ideal Business College in Piqua while working at G.C. Murphy's 5 & 10. She then went to work at Altman Mills grain elevator as an office clerk where she met Harry. After they were married, she moved to Peyote, Texas for two years while Harry was in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Kate was a dedicated member of the Piqua Congregational Christian United Church of Christ where she was on the church board of directors and the board of Deacons and Deaconesses. Kate was the church's Sunday School Superintendent for many years and she belonged to the church's Joy Circle and Couples Class. Kate contributed greatly to 4-H with 55 years of service as a 4-H adviser for the Springcreek Loyal Workers 4-H Club and as a past member of the Miami County 4-H advisers council. Previous to becoming a 4-H adviser, she was a member of Springcreek Loyal Workers 4-H club for 10 years. She was also a member of the Springcreek Sheepskin Community Club serving in various capacities and the Miami County Homemakers Club. She enjoyed sewing cooking, gardening, working on crafts, reading and her many club activities. Kate was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry; sister, Florence E. and husband Robert Pence; brother, Clarence R. and wife Wanda Cron; sister-in- law, Pauline Cron; brother-in-law, Galen Francis; great-grandson, Jordan Tyler David Brown; and sons-in-law, Emerson Drake, Kenneth Sheppard and David Brown. Survivors include her children, Charlotte E. Drake of Piqua, Patricia Sheppard of Brownsburg, Ind., Barbara J. Brown of Troy, and Roger A. Hopkins of Grand Prairie, Texas. Also one sister, Mabel "Midge" L. Francis of Troy; three brothers, Leroy E. Cron of Piqua, Raymond W. (Mary) Cron of Troy and Richard A. (Sheila) Cron of DeGraff. Kate has five grandchildren, Jennifer (Mike) Smith, Scott (Stafanie) Sheppard, Benjamin Sheppard, Kelly (Shawn) Pierce, and Alana (Cliff) Agaba; six great-grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Suber-Shively Funeral Home, 201 W. Main Street, Fletcher, with Pastor Bill Hewitt of the Piqua Congregational Christian Church of Christ presiding.
