DON CARLOS, born near Marietta, Ohio, March 23, 1818. Graduated at West Point, as first lieutenant, June 18, 1846. Brevetted captain at Monterey, and major at Contreras. Assistant adjutant-general at Washington, 1848-49. Made lieutenant-colonel May 11, 1861, and brigadier-general of volunteers, May 17, 1861. Assigned to a division in Army of the Potomac. Succeeded Sherman in Department of Cumberland. Made major-general of volunteers, March 21, 1862. Reinforced Grant at battle of Shiloh. Assumed command of district of Ohio, June 12, 1862. Retreated to Louisville before Bragg's advance. Fought at Perryville, October 8, 1862. Transferred to department of the Gulf. Resigned his command, June 1, 1864. Became president of Green River Iron Wroks, and subsequently held post of pension agent in Kentucky.
