Stanley *********************************************************************** CUSTER p.579 CUSTER, GEN. GEORGE ARMSTRONG, born in New Rumley, Ohio, December 5, 1839. Graduated at West Point in 1861. Entered Union service at head of cavalry command, and participated in battles of Bull Run and Manassas. Assistant engineer of earthworks at Yorktown, and accompanied Hancock's forces in pursuit of the enemy. Appointed captain, and served as aide to McClellan. In 1863, became aide to General Pleasanton. Served with Grant in the Wilderness campaign, and with Sheridan in Shenandoah Valley. Commanded a cavalry division in pursuit of Lee, after the evacuation of Richmond. After the war, was made lieutenant-colonel and brevet major-general and assigned to 7th U.S. Cavalry. Served with Hancock's expedition against the Cheyennes. Suspended a year for cruelty to his men. Restored, and served in the Yellowstone expedition of 1873, and in 1874 was sent to explore the Black Hills. In 1876 served under sheridan in expedition against the Sioux. Killed at battle of Little Big Horn June 25, 1876.
