Served in Mexican war and against Navajo Indians. Instructor at West Point, 1859-61. Commanded a division at Malvern Hill, second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, and in Wilderness campaign. At Lee's surrender received arms and colors of Army of Northern Virginia. Brevetted brigadier and major-general in regular army. Commanded district of Maine. Transferred to Texas, and died of yellow fever at Galveston, September 15, 1867.
