Stanley *********************************************************************** McDOWELL p.581 McDOWELL, GEN. IRWIN, born at Columbus, Ohio, October 15, 1818. Graduated from West Point in 1838. Remained as instructor of mathematics till 1845. At breaking out of Civil war, made a brigadier and placed in command of the Federal troops at Washington. In command of Union army when defeated at Bull Run July 21, 1861. McClellan took command, and McDowell was again placed in charge at Washington. Major-general of volunteers March 14, 1861, and commander of Department of Rappahannock April 14, 1862. Took distinguished part in the battles during Pope's campaign, but relieved of his command September 5, 1862. President of board of retiring officers 1863-64. In command of Department of Pacific July, 1864, to June, 1865. Made a major-general in 1872, and held command in the various departments, till retired in 1882. Died in San Francisco May 4, 1885.
