U.S.A. No Date Indicated My Dear Willa We arrived here today 11 1/2 o'clock all safe. Found Genl Nelson here. Col. Sills 33rd Regt, Col. Norton 2nd O.V. with half dozzen other officers & myself took dinner with the Genl. We had a most excellent dinner and I had been marching hard to get up here. It was a pritty rough country we came over the last two days and the people in the mountains of here are not very much enlightened. Jake Breckenridge passed over this road in October. We heard of his stopping at several places along the road. Yesterday, just below where he stayed all night two men came into the road ahead of my Regiment whose neighbors had complained to me of their Secession course and I ordered Adjt Charlie King to arrest them. He had a long chase after them and finally caught one of them by the name of Wills at the home Breckenridge had stayed a day or two and the other man took to a close field and got away. I swore the other one and let him go. There was another one, a pretty hard, arrested at the same place. He told me, in answer to a question, that he had just returned from the camp above at Prestonburg (Michenridge), said he went there to play cards and lost 25$. Swore him & let him go. Mr. Wadsworth made a speech here today to get volunteers. We have cold nights, white frosts. The comport is very comfortable indeed, although the days weather has been very favourable, I hope we will get out of the Mountains befor the cold sets in. Liut. Moebee goes home tomorrow and will take this letter down. We are within ten miles of West Liberty where they killed 15 Secessionist last march. None of the Union men were killed, 2 wounded. From accounts the forces above is scattering. I met six this morning directly after sunrise as I was going ahead of the Regt. To look at the road and of them was Mr. Hamilton from Bath County who is very wealthy. He looked ugly at me and I had a strong notion to arrest him, but as he came from the direction of Head Quarters I did not. I found the Genl. Had had hold of him and given him a terrible castigation which I suppose was the reason of his looking so crap. He was going home to behave himself under the Genl's Proclamation. I often wonder how you are getting along keeping Bachellars Hall! I think we may stay here a day or two but cannot tell tonight anything about it. Col. Marshall started above yesterday morning. Col. Morehead started today. Col. Norton and Sills expect to go tomorrow. That would leave me here. As supper is ready I will close until morning. Nov 1 Morning - The Liut. Col. and Major came last night, having ridden 42 miles. Could not give this to you until today "Honey". Yours Perry
