His troops, volunteer calvarymen, raided public property, burned bridges, took horses, and captured railroad supplies. They also caused severe losses amony Union troops. Morgan never commanded over 4,000 men, but it is said he captured as many as 15,000 soldiers. In 1863, Morgan's Raiders crossed into Ohio and brought Civil War fighting to its northernmost point. Morgan was captured in Columbiana County and was held in Columbus, OH until his escape. He continued his raids and was finally defeated in Kentucky, in June 1864. He went to Greeneville, TN, where he was surrounded by Union troops and shot.
