December 2, 1816 Philip and Elizabeth Slifer deeded 1/4 acre on Clayton Road to the Lutheran and Reformed congregation. The first church was a one story log structure built in 1819, on the site of the present church. A schoolhouse was across the road and it was used for religious services as well as for classes. This use of a school for church, school, public meetings, etc., was typical of early structures. The Lutheran and reformed congregations often shared one building in pioneer days. This schoolhouse was used until the erection of the first log church in 1819. It is reported that Rev. Mau (Mow) conducted the first funeral in that schoolhouse. A Reformed congregation was organized in 1817 with Rev. Thomas Winters as pastor who served this group from 1814-1840. He also ministered to five other congregations, traveling from 40 to 50 miles on mud roads and unbridged creeks. A Lutheran congregation was organized in 1816 with Rev. John Casper Dill as pastor. He served faithfully from 1815-1824. Rev. Samuel Mau preached in the community in 1810. Rev. Andrew Simon and Rev. Lewis Markat also preached there. As the congregations met in the little log church, a need for more space was apparent; so in 1825 a second story was added. Then again a larger structure was needed so in 1858 the first brick church was constructed with Rev. Andrew Hinkle pastor of the Lutheran congregation and Rev. A. Wanner pastor of the Reformed. This church served both congregations well until 1896 when again a large church was needed so the present building was erected with Rev. C.E. Ewing pastor of the Reformed congregation and Rev. V.B. Christy as pastor of the Lutheran. Rev. Mau preached in 1810 and also in some following years. He lived in what was called the Stiver Neighborhood northeast of Farmersville. He also taught and preached at the Stiver Church School. The church became Presbyterian in 1954 and has an active membership. Ministers of Slifer's Church 1. Philip Slifer 2. Elizabeth Slifer 3. Rev. Elisabeth Seiler **Elisabeth is buried in the church yard row 7 SLIFER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH CEMETERY, SOUTH OF CHURCH Register copied November 1980 Located at the Corner of Clayton & Chicken Bristle Road, Montgomery County, Farmersville, Ohio Listings by Mr. & Mrs. Rumbarger Revised by Donald Shell Edited, rechecked, and computerized by Steven L. & Donna E. KLINE Mathis September 1998 There are 300+ graves located in Slifers Cemetery. Slifers is on the south side of the church. Holp is north across Chicken Bristol Road. Slifers is a very old cemetery that dates to the begining of the church and probably one of the oldest in Montgomery County. The oldest marked grave is Elisabeth Seiler who died at the age of 28 on May 24,1810. She was the wife of U. Seiler. The grave is in row 7. Many of the stones are begining to deteriorate but considering the age most are still readable. A small percentage of the stones were unreadable with out the aid of some chalk, flour or a good brushing. Stones have been moved over the years from damage to vandals or mowing. Some stones are placed on the next row of graves to ease mowing of the grass. The bases are still there and with a little effort, the exact location of the grave can be found by comparing the stone with a base. There are the exceptions though. Some information was gathered from church records by the previous transcribers and is not marked on the stone. The records will be compared at a later date. If you compare our records with what you read on the stones you will most disgree with what we have. They are very hard to read. It is easy to transpose numbers and letters. Examples: 1 could be a 7. 2 & 8's could be 3. Sometimes 4 could be 7. It is very hard to see when a stone has weathered. Look for your self and let us know if this was of some help to you. The rows start at the church parking lot and runs from right to left as you stand in the church parking lot.
