Thies, 82, widely known retired architect, died Tuesday morning at the Good Samaritan hospital, after an illness of a week. He suffered from heart disease. An architect and engineer for 35 years, he was in business with his sons under the firm name of Thies and Thies up to 1928. He helped direct the construction of the Troy-Pearl Laundry building, the Joyce-Cridland Co., the Santa Clara Avenue Church of Christ, the Holden hotel, the McCormick Manufacturing Co. building, the new buildings of the St. Elizabeth hospital, the Fenwick club in Cincinnati and various other edifices. For many years he resided at 3131 N. Main st. and was beloved of the children of the neighborhood who called him "Grandpa". He was born just off the Brandt pike and was the son of Theodore Thies a native of Germany. He belonged to Sacred Heart church, and the Knights of St. John, St. Martin Commandery. Surviving him are two daughters, Mrs. Eleanore M. Kilcoyne, Mrs. Garfield Puls; two sons Urban C. and Walter J. Thies; nine grandchildren; four brothers, William, Henry, Charles, and Frank Thies and a sister Mrs. Elizabeth Hochwalt. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 8:30 a.m. from the residence, followed by requiem high mass at Sacred Heart church at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.
