J. White M. J. White- M. J. White was brought to Iowa by his parents, when he was ten years of age. He was born in Morgan County, Ohio in September 1843. The family went from there to Muscatine by water, and drove a team from Muscatine to Marion in April, 1853. White lived on a farm until 1888, when he moved to Mt. Vernon. In 1891 he moved to Marion, and has lived here since that time. The Civil War record of Mr. White includes most of the engagements of Company A, Thirty-first Iowa Volunteers. He enlisted August 6, the same time as Richard Reiley joined the service. Both men served together, having been discharged June 27, 1865. Their battles included Vicksburg, the Atlanta campaign and the march to the sea with Sherman. Mr. White did not serve at Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge, but his comrade took part in both of these. Mr. White was present for the grand review at Washington, D. C., May 24, 1865.
