He was born April 2, 1753, at Germantown, Pennsylvania. He lived in that part of Virginia which is now called Brooke County, part of which was in Washington County Pennsylvania. He lived in Harrison County, Ohio, for eight years and then moved to Morgan County, Ohio, where he had lived for eight years previous to 1832.
