Jan 31st. ‘92 Mr. George O. Cooper Tama, Iowa Dear Cousin Of course I was surprised to hear from you, but I was glad to hear from you. But I never dreamed of my letter to Aunt Vina going to pay a visit to so many relatives. I think Cousin Sarah might have written to me also. Mother passed away Dec. 21st. She was bedfast just two months. She had no disease in particular. She was real fleshy. When father died, and we think she grieved after him, as they lived together almost 69 y’rs. She was 87 y’rs & almost 10 month old. She only lived 5 months after father’s departure. And O, it is so sad to lose them both and so close together. We have had one of Sister Hattie’s girls here for the last 14 y’rs and she is with me. There is 4 children of us left; Brother William lives in Long Lake, Minn, Sam is at De Soto, Kans, and Sarah is our closest neighbor. My brother, Burr, died March 16th 1861. Jane died in ‘69. Arabell in ‘71. Hattie in the yr ‘77. Aunt Susan (Murdock) Newton died in Dec. ‘72 & Aunt Martha Johnston died years ago. You will have to ask Aunt Vina how long ago. Aunt Martha has one girl living. Mary Jane died before her mother. Tavie was the youngest. She married a man by the name of Atchison year ago last Sept and lives in Mansfield, Ohio. Uncle John has three girls living. I had a letter from cousin Mary (Cooper) Rowling about a month ago. Her address is 106 King St., Dayton. O. Adaline lives on the old home place where Uncle died and her sister Sarah Hubble moved to Kentuccky some 2 or 3 y’rs ago. Adaline was married over a y’r ago, but I don’t know who she married. Aunt Becca, (her mother) died some 3 y’rs ago. So that is the history of Uncle John’s children. Mary & Adaline were here on a visit two years ago. Uncle Isaac has 2 boys. Snider lives in Chicago, Ill. He is a lawyer. Talmadge lives in Mansfield, Ohio. Aunt Catherarine was here most of the time while mother was sick, but I have not seen her lately. Uncle Wm. & Aunt Jane are both dead, but they have 5 children living. Jimmy, Frank, Calvin,* and Vide Tucker live in Mt. Gilead, but Ella Jago, the youngest girl lives in Cincinnati, or suburbs, Blanch Corwin is the name of my niece that lives with me. She has two sisters, Georgia & Ettie. They both have good homes. Georgia is the oldest, she lives at Steve Fulton’s 3 miles east of Gilead. Ettie lives with Mr. Warner, a mile east of Westpoint. Bro Sam is a widower and has been since the year ‘85. *Calvin’s wife died a year ago. Cousin, Robison Murdock, wife & daughter were here on a visit in Sept. ‘88 and I had a letter from them a little over a month ago. Uncle Elias & his daughter, Clara were here at the funeral. Aunt Maria has rather poor health. Clara is a widow but Kate’s husband is living. The two girls both live at home with their parents. Lynch lives on a farm down by Marengo. Hannibal lives in Coffeeville, Kans. Nanacy Geller lives in Gilead, but I have not seen her for years. Well I think I have given you quite a history. If you have any more questions send’em on. Additional Comments: This letter was recently discovered among others from the keepsakes of George Oscar Cooper, born 13 Mar 1836 in Mt. Gilead, OH, died 18 Aug 1911, Thayer, Union County, Iowa. He was my great great grandfather. His Uncle John and Aunt Becca Cooper were likely the John and Rebecca Cooper in Knox County, OH in the very early 1800's. His uncles William, Isaac, and Elias Cooper can be found in the 1850 census in Mt. Gilead, Morrow County, OH.
