Sentinel of May 21, 1896: Ohio Edith Levada Purdy, daughter of J. an S. Purdy was born September 30th, 1879 and died of consumption May 11th, 1896 after an illness of about four months. She was converted in March, 1895, and joined the M.E. church at Mt. Tabor. She was of a kind, gentle diposition, and was greatly beloved by her associates. She bore her suffering during her sickness without a murmur: she often talked with her mother about Jesus and her heavenly home. The night she died she was very happy and talked to her brothers, sisters and associates who were present urging them to seek the Lord and serve Him so they could meet her in heaven. The funeral services which were attended by a large number of friends and neighbors were held at the church at Johnsville by her pastor, J.F. Hastings where her body was laid away to await the resurrection morn; but Edith is not there, for she has gone to join the angel band and dwell foever with the Lord. She's been taken from among us Taken home and been redeemed; And it naturally reminds us Of the sheaf from thistles gleaned. When we think of her who's left us, How our heart with sorrow thrills, And the vacant place so empty, With a thousand wishes fills. Just four months of patient suffering Was endured withour complaint, Until our Savior in His goodness, Came and took our little saint. And when sitting by her bedside, With an almost broken heart, We were looking every moment For her spirit to depart. On her pure and lovely countenance She wore a calm and distant look, As though she saw her name imprinted On the great Recorder's book. She called her sisters and her brothers One by one unto her side, Bade them each to live as christians, And to stem the mighty tide. But the great consoling knowledge That she's gone to rest above, Reminds us all of our own privilege To accept our Savior's love. While we on earth are mourning Over our departed friend, Edith, with the angels is rejoicing In a world that ne'er shall end. *************OH-FOOTSEPS Mailing List***************************
