"Pete" norman, 49 of 284 Main street, Duncan Falls, owner-operator of the Dairy Queen there, drowned at 8:35 a.m. Sunday after his car was struck by another auto and driven in the Muskingum River one and half miles south of the Five Mile Bridge, the Highway Patrol reported. Coroner S. S. Daw ruled death was accidental due to drowning. Patrolman Edward Swirz said Norman was driving south when his car was struck in the rear by one sriven by Carroll Lee Patterson, 27, of 2015 Montrgomery avenue. The impact cuased the Norman car to go out of control and it passed through an opening in the guard rail, down an embankment and into the river. Swirz said Patterson was uninjured and stopped his car and attempted to open a door on the Norman car and pull the man out, but the car was rapidly sinking and the current forced the door shut as the car became completely submerged. Duncan Falls Volunteer Fire Department summoned several divers who fastened cable to the car and it was pulled out of the river within less than an hour after the accident, Swirz siad. Patterson told officers he was attempting to pass the Norman car when the accident occurred. Mr. Norman was born in Zanesville, June 28, 1923, a son of Dwight and Erma Kinkade Norman. His mother of 621 Merrick avenue survives. He had operated the Dairy Queen 14 years. Prior to that time he was an industrial engineer at the Line Material Company on Pershing road. He attended Ohio University. Mr. Norman was a member of Grace United Methodist church, Lafayette Lodge 79 F&AM, Duncan Falls Lions Club and Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving in addition to his mother. are his widow, Ann Archer Norman, a son, Eric of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Beth Ann) Laurent of Columbus and Kathy of the home. The body was taken to DeLong and Baker Funeral Home, where friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Rev. Louise Bell will officiate and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
